This debate activity is aimed to enhance students’ critical thinking ability to analyze a social policy. The instructor will randomly assign students to a Yes/No side in one of the debate sessions.
1. Lecture 5 (10/4): Should Taiwan implement a universal basic income policy? (Yes/No)?
2. Lecture 8 (10/25): Should Taiwan encourage low-income individuals to start micro-enterprises (Yes/No)?
3. Lecture 10 (11/8): Is work conditionality in social assistance policies (workfare policies) beneficial to alleviating poverty (Yes/No)?
The debate will proceed by the following steps:
1) 10 minutes: The Yes side’s arguments
2) 10 minutes: The No side’s arguments
3) 10 minutes: Questions from the rest of the class
4) 5 minutes: The Yes side’s rebuttal
5) 5 minutes: The No side’s rebuttal
Every group should be mindful of the time control. PowerPoint slides are recommended but not mandatory for the presentation. The number of presenters is up to each group, but all members have to take part in the panel sessions (i.e., questions and rebuttal). |

Food Security Paper |

Based on your visit to Nanjichang Neighborhood (南機場社區), each student will write a short 2-page paper to (1) identify relevant social policies to meet the food needs of the poor, (2) use the welfare mix idea to analyze how to best address food insecurity problem, (3) propose service improvement and policy recommendations, and (4) provide personal reflections.

Employment Service Paper |

Based on your assigned job applicant role and the self-pace field visit at an Employment Service Station, each student will write a short 2-page paper to (1) analyze the strengths and weaknesses of existing services, (2) propose service improvement and policy recommendations, and (3) provide personal reflections.

Final Paper |
40% |
Pick one of the two topics for your final paper: (1) “Analyze the effectiveness of the social assistance policy in (location) in alleviating poverty.” (2) “Analyze the effectiveness of employment services/policies in (location) in alleviating poverty.”
Consider the design of policies/services, implementation process, public discourse, strengths, weaknesses, problems, policy outcomes, and evidence.
(1) Presentation 15% and Written Papers 25%
(2) Please use APA citation style
(3) Page limit: 5 pages
(4) Please notify the instructor your selected final project topic by November 1.
(5) The written paper is due on December 23. |
